Men often have a little trouble accessorising – they don’t always have a woman to tell them what to wear and often have no idea where to start. Only a handful of men were born with a dapper sense of style and creativity when it comes to accessorising and dressing. That doesn’t mean it can’t be taught though; take a look at our greatest accessorising and styling tips for men:
Less is More When it Comes to Jewellery
When it comes to wearing jewellery, less is more for men. Women can get away with it but the sad truth is men often can’t. It’s risky for guys to pile on the bling; they can end up looking like Mr T pretty quickly! Try to keep your jewellery to an acceptable level – don’t wear so many rings and chains that you look like some kind of gangster. It can make you look like you’re trying to show off, which is not cool at all!
Wear Sentimental Pieces
We think men should wear the most sentimental pieces to them when it comes to jewellery. If you have a lot of sentimental pieces, obviously don’t wear them all at once. You may have some catholic saint medals that a relative gave you; wear those! They have a story behind them and can also be a great conversation starter.
If in Doubt, Don’t Wear it
Whatever you wear, you need to be sure that it says a little something about you. If you’re not sure about something, you probably shouldn’t wear it. You won’t feel or look comfortable, and you want to show off your personality the right way.
Use This Season’s Accessories to Modernise Last Season’s Outfit
There’s no need to buy whole new outfits every season. You can make a lot of your old clothes work for you by modernising them with this season’s accessories. The great thing about accessories is that they can make an outfit look completely different!
Match Accessories With Your Outfits
Make sure there’s something matching going on in your outfits and accessories. It could be colour, style, weight, or something else altogether. Just make sure that it ties in!
Consider Contrasting Your Look
You don’t always have to match what you’re wearing. Consider contrasting it if you’re brave enough! Contrasting colours can be a really fun way to make your outfit stand out.
Don’t Fear the Briefcase or the ‘Manbag’
The briefcase/manbag is one of the most popular accessories for men that you’ll come across these days. Not only does it look good, it’s practical too! You can use it to store important things for the day, and even as an overnight bag if needs be. It’s definitely worth investing in and a great alternative to a scruffy backpack.
Make a Statement With Your Wrist-wear
Some say that a man’s wrist is naked without a watch. Why not make a statement with your wrist-wear? You can find all kinds of different styles, so use your imagination! Make sure you come up with a budget first, as it can be easy to overspend when it comes to watches. We recommend making one main purchase as opposed to loads of little ones, as with watches you really get what you pay for.
Make Sure Your Clothes Fit You (Especially Suits)
The best thing you can do when buying clothes is ensure that they fit you properly. If you wear clothes that are too baggy for you, you can end up looking like a boy in men’s clothing! This is especially important when it comes to suits. If you don’t get one that fits you properly, you’ll look like a man with a court case rather than a business man. Every suit should be an investment, so its important to get the size right when you buy – you want a suit thats going to last you a good few years.
Try to Come Up With a Signature Look
This isn’t essential, but if you come up with a signature look you can shop for clothes and accessories much easier. What kind of look would you like to emulate? There’s classy, boho, grunge, preppy and plenty of other styles for men. Make sure you don’t try to be anything that you’re not!
Invest in Quality Wardrobe Staples
One of the best things you can do when spending your money, is invest in quality wardrobe staples. Think of the things you use the most and then find quality items. For example, shoes; you can’t go wrong with a good quality pair of shoes. Belts, jackets, and even ties are all essential too, so worth splashing out on!
Jumpers are great wardrobe staples, great for keeping warm in the winter or summer night round a BBQ. A turtleneck jumper is a great jumper to have in your wardrobe and bang on trend for this yet. For the best turtleneck jumpers for 2017, check out the guide.
Sunglasses are a Must
Sunglasses are an absolute must! Not only do they look cool, they protect the eyes and the skin around them from sun damage. A great way to stop premature ageing around the eyes. Make sure you pick a pair of sunglasses that suit your face shape. Round faces suit sharper styles, and vice versa. It’s usually advisable that you go shopping with a woman you trust, so you can get an honest opinion on what suits you. Most men are hopeless when they go shopping alone!
Don’t Wear More Than 3 Colours
When it comes to wearing colours, it’s a good idea to mix things up a bit and wear colours you love. However, you should never wear more than 3 at one time. Wearing more than 3 colours can be sensory overload, and make you look like a walking rainbow. Usually, I like to stick to the 100% rule. Wear 60% one colour, 30% another, and 10% another. This spaces everything out evenly and makes an outfit look more put together.
Don’t Automatically Follow Trends – Create Your Own
The worst thing you can do is automatically follow trends. If you really love a trend, then go ahead and wear it. However, trends come and go quite quickly. Following each trend that emerges can leave you out of pocket in the long run! Instead, go for more classic styles that you love personally so you can get your own sense of personal style.
Use these style & accessorising tips when you dress and you’ll notice that your outfits look much more put together.
