The Mod look was huge in the latest 50s and 60s when bands like The Who and The Jam pioneered the smart style. It also had somewhat of a resurgence in the 80s and 90s when indie bands like Oasis, brought the style back to the forefront, so it is hardly surprising that the Mod look is back in fashion again.
If you want to look extremely smart, while looking slightly edgy, it might just be the perfect look for you, so check out this quick guide to getting the Mod look:
The Basic Style
The Mod look comprises, in the main, of smart, classic basics like dark polo shirts, chinos and Chelsea boots. It also favours bold paisley prints, bright geometric designs and narrowly tailored silhouettes. Fill your wardrobe with as many of these things, and you’ll be off to a good start.
Day Shirts
You’ll rarely see a Mod who isn’t wearing a favourite polo shirt when they’re out and about during the day. Fred Perry polo shirts are particularly popular because they have a classic shape and style, which is both comfortable and smart casual.
A polo shirt should be paired with a slim fitting pair of denim jeans and a classic Mod Harrington Jackets, all of which can be purchased from Scotts. Finish off with a nice pair of Chelsea boots, and you’re good to go.
Of course, if you want to go all out, teaming your shirt with a fitted suit, and a crazy cravat will elevate you to the top of the mod food chain and ensure that you really impress.
Evening Shirts
If you’re planning a night out with the boys, you’ll want to switch your polo shirt for a colourful printed button up shirt. The rest of your outfit need not change because the average Mod look is pretty smart as it is. Paisley is a particular favourite with the Mod set, as you can see by taking a look at Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green label, but a plain white grandfather shirt will be just as good if you’re a bit more reserved in your style.
Coats
When it comes to coats, most Mods favour the Harrington jacket or bomber jacket looks, or when it’s colder, possibly the parker. This is because all of these coats can easily be paired with the classic polo shirt and jeans for a put-together look that the ladies will admire.
Trousers
You never see a Mod wearing baggy, ill-fitting trousers. They are always kitted out in tailored slim fit jeans, that create a dashing silhouette, while also offering a decent level of comfort. Many Mods favour denim jeans with turn ups that show off their boots, but that isn’t strictly necessary.
Shoes
Think of the most famous Mods, and you’ll probably remember their fondness for super sleek, shiny Chelsea boots in black or brown leather. These are probably your best bet because they will look good with anything, but, Dr Martens are also a good choice for the smart Mod about town.
It might seem like creating the Mod look is a lot of hassle, but really, you can pick up everything you need in the average menswear department, and because most of your clothes will automatically look good together, getting dressed will be easier than ever.
